Walk through the Connect Instagram Business Account flow from Continue with Facebook to the connected page.

Overview

Connect Instagram to manage and respond to direct messages 24/7, building stronger relationships and brand loyalty through timely interactions. The connect flow is Meta's: sign in with Facebook, pick the Business account the Instagram professional profile is linked to, and MessageMind takes over inbox and comment replies on that account.

What MessageMind can do with it

Requirements

  • An Instagram Professional or Creator account linked to a Facebook Page.
  • The Facebook account completing the connection must have admin access to that Facebook Page.
  • The Facebook Page in turn is owned by a Meta Business Account (Business Portfolio) with no outstanding issues.

How to connect

  1. Open MessageMind and go to /channels/instagram. You will see the Connect Instagram Business Account card.
  2. Click Continue with Facebook. Meta's popup opens.
  3. Sign in to Facebook, pick the Business account you want to connect, and grant the requested permissions when prompted.
  4. Meta redirects back to MessageMind. The card flips to Connected with Instagram and shows the Connected Instagram Page under it.
  5. If more than one Instagram professional profile is linked to the pages you granted, pick the one you want the AI to run on from the accounts list.

Authentication and permissions

Mechanism
No separate Instagram login. The Facebook Page access token issued during the Facebook connection is reused for every Instagram Graph API call for the linked account.
Credentials
The parent Facebook Page's access token, stored on your MessageMind tenant and used server-side for both messaging and comment events.

Available data and actions

Reads

  • The Instagram business account linked to each connected Facebook Page, including username, display name and profile picture.
  • Incoming Instagram DM events on every subscribed account: messages, reactions, postbacks, referrals, seen, handover and standby.
  • Comment and mention events on the account's media, including live-video comments.

Writes

  • Replies to Instagram comments on media owned by the connected account.
  • Webhook subscription state on each Instagram account: subscribing enables real-time events, unsubscribing stops them.

AI agent use cases

  • Reply to every Instagram DM within seconds of it arriving, including story replies and ad-driven conversations.
  • Reply to comments on posts, Reels and live videos in the voice of the account to keep engagement moving.
  • Pause the AI on one Instagram account by unsubscribing it, while leaving its parent Page and sibling accounts active.

Configuration

  • Each Instagram account inherits the token of its linked Facebook Page. If the Page token is invalidated, the Instagram account goes offline until Facebook is reconnected.
  • Each Instagram account has its own on/off toggle in MessageMind, independent of the parent Page.
  • Instagram accounts linked to a Page after the initial connection appear the next time the connected Pages view loads, starting out unsubscribed.
  • Instagram accounts unlinked from a Page are dropped from MessageMind the next time the connected Pages view loads.

Example workflows

Light up Instagram DMs for a Page

  1. Complete the Facebook connection and grant access to the Page whose Instagram account you want on.
  2. MessageMind reads the linked instagram_business_account from the Page and stores it against your tenant.
  3. The Instagram account is subscribed to messaging and comment events using the Page's token.
  4. The account appears in MessageMind with a subscription toggle. New DMs and comments flow to the AI immediately.

Reply under a post without leaving the thread

  1. A customer comments on one of the account's posts.
  2. MessageMind receives the Instagram comment event.
  3. The AI replies to the comment on that media, keeping the exchange visible under the post.

Limitations

  • A Facebook Page with no linked Instagram business account produces no Instagram connection. Link an Instagram business account to the Page on Facebook, then reconnect in MessageMind.
  • There is no standalone Instagram login. Disconnecting Facebook also removes every Instagram account tied to those Pages.
  • Instagram authentication depends entirely on the parent Page's access token. If the Page token is invalidated by Facebook, the Instagram account stops receiving events until you reconnect.

Troubleshooting

An Instagram account is missing after connecting Facebook.

MessageMind only sees Instagram accounts that are linked to a Facebook Page as a business account. In Facebook, link the Instagram business account to the Page, then reload the connected Pages view in MessageMind.

Instagram DMs stop arriving on an account that used to work.

Open the connected Pages view in MessageMind. If the Instagram account shows as unsubscribed, toggle it back on. If the parent Facebook Page's token is flagged as invalid, reconnect Facebook to issue a fresh token.

The AI never replies to Instagram comments.

Confirm the Instagram account is enabled in MessageMind. Comment replies are posted on media owned by the connected account only; comments on media the account does not own are read but cannot be replied to.

Disconnect and reconnect

  • On /channels/instagram, click Disconnect. The confirmation modal says: 'When you disconnect, all your data will be permanently deleted from MessageMind, including any associated messages and information stored in our system. Additionally, we will revoke the authorization you have granted us from Instagram, which means we will no longer have access to your Instagram data or messages.'
  • To stop one Instagram account without taking the whole connection down, use the per-account toggle in the connected accounts list instead. Its webhook subscription is cleared and the AI stops acting on it; sibling accounts and the parent Facebook Page keep running.
  • To reconnect, click Continue with Facebook again. Instagram accounts linked to the pages you grant are re-detected and re-subscribed from the fresh Page tokens; posts and comment history on Instagram itself are untouched.
