Phone calls AI Integration: How It Works and How to Connect It
The Phone calls AI integration lets MessageMind's AI agent read live Phone calls data and reply across WhatsApp, SMS, Instagram, email and web chat.
The Phone calls AI integration connects Phone calls to MessageMind so an AI agent can read live context and reply across every channel your customers use. Call your customers from the MessageMind Workspace in your browser, using one of your Twilio numbers as the caller ID. You talk through your computer's microphone and speakers. Each call is saved in the SMS conversation with that phone number and listed in Call History, with a recording if you made one.
What is the Phone calls AI integration?
Call your customers from the MessageMind Workspace in your browser, using one of your Twilio numbers as the caller ID. You talk through your computer's microphone and speakers. Each call is saved in the SMS conversation with that phone number and listed in Call History, with a recording if you made one. Calls use the Twilio SMS & Voice channel, so connect that channel first.
You can see every supported integration on the MessageMind integrations page, and the full technical reference for this one lives in the Phone calls documentation. If you prefer to see it in action first, book a demo and we will walk you through the live flow.
What the Phone calls integration can do
The Phone calls AI integration ships with the following capabilities out of the box:
- Call a contact from their conversation, from Contacts, from a pipeline card, or with New Call in the + menu above the conversation list.
- Call someone who isn't saved yet. New Call lets you type a name and number while you set up the call.
- Pick which of your numbers the person sees. When you have a number in the same country as the person you're calling, it's selected for you.
- Record the whole call, or start and stop the recording while you talk.
- Use the dial pad to get through a phone menu, for example "press 1 for bookings".
- Bring a colleague or another contact into the call. They get a normal phone call and join when they answer.
- Mute yourself, or shrink the call window to a small bar in the corner of the screen.
Data read and written
The Phone calls AI integration touches a scoped set of fields. Here is exactly what moves between the two systems:
| Direction | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Read | Your voice-enabled Twilio numbers, listed under Outbound number. |
| Read | The phone numbers saved on the contact, listed under Call number. |
| Read | Whether the call is ringing, answered, declined or unanswered, shown live in the call window. |
| Write | A phone call from your chosen outbound number to the person you're calling. |
| Write | A phone call from the same outbound number to each person you add to the call. |
| Write | A recording of the call, when you record, attached to the call entry in the conversation. |
| Write | A call entry in the SMS conversation with that number, such as Voice Call with the duration, No Answer, Call Declined or Call failed. The same call shows up under Call History in the Workspace. |
| Write | An extra phone number on the contact, when you add one in the call window before calling. If another contact already has that number, you're asked before the two contacts are merged. |
How to set up the Phone calls AI integration
Setup takes a few minutes once your Phone calls account is live. The outline:
- Connect the Twilio SMS & Voice channel under Connections > Channels if you haven't yet.
- Open the Workspace and go to the conversation with the person you want to call.
- Click the phone icon at the top of the conversation. Its tooltip reads "Start an outbound call".
- In the Start a call window, choose Human call.
- Check the number you're calling. If the contact has more than one, pick it under Call number.
- Check the Outbound number. This is the number the person sees when their phone rings.
The step-by-step walkthrough, including every button and field, is in the Phone calls documentation.
Use cases for the Phone calls AI integration
Teams typically turn the Phone calls AI integration on to:
- If you'd rather not make the call yourself, choose AI call in the same Start a call window. You write a Greeting message and a Call prompt that explains the goal, and the AI agent places the call and talks to the person.

Limitations to know
The Phone calls integration ships with a deliberately scoped surface. These are the limits worth knowing before you depend on it:
- Calls in the browser are outgoing only. You can't pick up an incoming call to your Twilio number here.
- Calls always go out through Twilio, even when you start one from a WhatsApp, Instagram or email conversation. The call entry is saved in the SMS conversation with that phone number, not in the chat you started from.
- The caller ID must be one of the numbers on your Twilio SMS & Voice channel.
- You can only add people from your saved contacts, and the call goes to the contact's main phone number.
- When the person you called hangs up, the call ends for everyone, including anyone you added.
Pricing and plan availability
The Phone calls AI integration is available on MessageMind's paid plans. The MessageMind pricing page lists which plan is required and what each tier includes. There is no extra per-integration fee; the connection is part of your account.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Phone calls AI integration?
The Phone calls AI integration is the native connection between Phone calls and MessageMind. Once connected, the AI agent can read live Phone calls context during a conversation and act on it (for example answering a stock question, booking an appointment or updating a contact) across WhatsApp, Instagram, SMS, email and web chat.
How do I connect Phone calls to MessageMind?
Open the Phone calls integration page inside your MessageMind dashboard and follow the connect flow. The full step-by-step with every field label and screenshot is in the Phone calls documentation.
How does authentication work for the Phone calls integration?
There is no separate sign-in for calls. They go through the Twilio SMS & Voice channel you already connected.
What does the AI agent do once Phone calls is connected?
It works with live Phone calls data during the conversation. The first capability in the Phone calls documentation reads: "Call a contact from their conversation, from Contacts, from a pipeline card, or with New Call in the + menu above the conversation list." The full list, with every field the integration reads and writes, is in the documentation.
There is no phone icon at the top of the conversation. What should I do?
The icon only shows when the contact has a phone number, and it's hidden in Spam and when the browser window is narrow. Add a number to the contact or widen the window, or use New Call and type the number.
