The SMS AI integration connects SMS to MessageMind so an AI agent can read live context and reply across every channel your customers use. Connect your Twilio account so customers can text your business number and get replies from the AI agent. Their texts open SMS conversations in the Workspace, and every reply, yours or the AI agent's, goes out from the number the customer wrote to.

What is the SMS AI integration?

Connect your Twilio account so customers can text your business number and get replies from the AI agent. Their texts open SMS conversations in the Workspace, and every reply, yours or the AI agent's, goes out from the number the customer wrote to. Numbers that support voice can also take phone calls through the same connection.

You can see every supported integration on the MessageMind integrations page, and the full technical reference for this one lives in the SMS documentation. If you prefer to see it in action first, book a demo and we will walk you through the live flow.

What the SMS integration can do

The SMS AI integration ships with the following capabilities out of the box:

  • Texts sent to your connected Twilio numbers show up as SMS conversations in Workspace > Main Inbox.
  • The AI agent answers incoming texts from the same number the customer wrote to.
  • You and your team can reply from any SMS conversation, and attach images when the number supports MMS.
  • Start a new SMS conversation with a contact from the New chat window.
  • Campaigns can send your SMS templates with the Send SMS step.
  • Connect several numbers from the same Twilio account and switch SMS or Voice on and off for each one.

Data read and written

The SMS AI integration touches a scoped set of fields. Here is exactly what moves between the two systems:

DirectionWhat it covers
ReadThe phone numbers on your Twilio account, so you can choose which ones to connect.
ReadWhat each number supports: SMS, MMS and voice.
ReadTexts and pictures that customers send to your connected numbers.
WriteTexts sent from your connected numbers by you, your team, the AI agent or a campaign, with pictures on MMS numbers.
WriteEach connected number's incoming text and call settings in Twilio, so texts and calls reach MessageMind. Switching SMS or Voice off, or disconnecting, clears them.

How to set up the SMS AI integration

Setup takes a few minutes once your SMS account is live. The outline:

  • Go to Connections > Channels and click the Twilio SMS & Voice card. The SMS & Voice filter on the left shortens the list.
  • Under Connect Twilio SMS, click the Twilio link and sign in to Twilio in the tab that opens.
  • Copy the Account SID from your Twilio Console dashboard and paste it into the first field.
  • Copy the Auth Token from the same dashboard and paste it into the field that appears below it.
  • Under Select Connection Type, choose SMS, Voice or SMS & Voice.
  • Pick the number to connect from the list that loads. The first number on the account is selected for you.

The step-by-step walkthrough, including every button and field, is in the SMS documentation.

Use cases for the SMS AI integration

Teams typically turn the SMS AI integration on to:

  • A customer texts late on a Sunday to ask what time you open on Monday, and the AI agent replies by text with the hours you gave it in AI Training.
  • A customer sends a photo of a damaged parcel with a short message. The picture shows up in the conversation and the AI agent reads it along with the text.
  • A campaign sends an SMS template, the customer texts back, and the AI agent carries on the conversation from there.
  • During a phone call to the same number, the AI agent texts the caller a link or an address. This needs SMS In-Call Messages turned on in AI Lab > AI Training.

For broader AI-agent patterns across every integration, see ai chatbot for business.

Limitations to know

The SMS integration ships with a deliberately scoped surface. These are the limits worth knowing before you depend on it:

  • Only one Twilio account can be connected. Every number you add has to come from that same account.
  • The first connection takes one number. Add the others afterwards with Add Number.
  • A text can be up to 1,600 characters. A longer reply shows an error and is not sent.
  • Pictures need an MMS-capable number. On other numbers the image button is greyed out with the hint "This number does not support MMS."
  • When a customer sends several pictures in one message, only the first one comes through.

Pricing and plan availability

The SMS AI integration is available on MessageMind's paid plans. The MessageMind pricing page lists which plan is required and what each tier includes. There is no extra per-integration fee; the connection is part of your account.

Frequently asked questions

What is the SMS AI integration?

The SMS AI integration is the native connection between SMS and MessageMind. Once connected, the AI agent can read live SMS context during a conversation and act on it (for example answering a stock question, booking an appointment or updating a contact) across WhatsApp, Instagram, SMS, email and web chat.

How do I connect SMS to MessageMind?

Open the SMS integration page inside your MessageMind dashboard and follow the connect flow. The full step-by-step with every field label and screenshot is in the SMS documentation.

How does authentication work for the SMS integration?

You paste your Twilio Account SID and Auth Token on the Twilio SMS & Voice page. You don't sign in to Twilio from inside MessageMind. MessageMind stores these credentials encrypted at rest and uses them only server-side, so they never reach the browser or any third party.

What does the AI agent do once SMS is connected?

It works with live SMS data during the conversation. The first capability in the SMS documentation reads: "Texts sent to your connected Twilio numbers show up as SMS conversations in Workspace > Main Inbox." The full list, with every field the integration reads and writes, is in the documentation.

The Account SID field shows "Invalid Account SID Format". What should I do?

The Account SID starts with AC and has 34 characters. Copy it again from your Twilio Console dashboard, without spaces. API key SIDs, which start with SK, don't work here.
